Behind the Song

For everybody with two left feet

September 1, 2026

There are two new songs up, and they're both about the same thing: being the worst person on the floor and doing it anyway.

The first one's called "Two Left Boots." It's about walking into a room where everybody already seems to know what they're doing, picking a spot in the second row, and hoping the lights stay low. Then finding out that nobody's actually watching you, because they're all busy counting under their breath too.

The second is "Left, Right, Hold On Tight," and it's older than it looks. I wrote it a while back, filed it somewhere sensible, and then genuinely lost track of it — one of those songs that exists on a hard drive and nowhere in your memory. When it turned up again I couldn't believe I'd sat on it. It's a Friday night song. Somebody grabs your hand, tells you not to think about it, and the thinking stops being the point.

I keep coming back to this idea because it's the truest thing I know about a dance floor: everybody there was terrible once. The couple who look like they've been doing it thirty years were beginners for a while, and probably worse at it than you are now. The only genuinely wrong move is standing against the wall doing the math.

So — two songs for anybody who's ever wanted to and didn't. Go be bad at something in public. It's better than it sounds.
