Behind the Song

The earlier sunset

November 2, 2026

This is the first week the sun goes down before dinner. For about six months we've gotten used to the sky doing its thing around eight, sometimes later. Now it's suddenly happening while you're still deciding what to cook.

It's a good reason to talk about "Stay For The Sunset," because the whole song is an argument for not leaving. Shoes in one hand, keys in the other, and somebody at the edge of the lot saying it's time to head home. You know the one. And then somebody else says, wait, look at that.

I wrote it from the side of the person who wants to stay. It isn't anything profound. The sky is about to go gold and it'll only do it once tonight, and the dishes and the email can wait ten minutes.

That's going to be easier now, in a way. With the sunset coming earlier, you don't have to choose between the sky and your evening. It fits right in the afternoon, like it was always supposed to.

So tonight, for ten minutes, go find a westward view. Leave the errand undone. Let it go gold one more time.
